Born in St Clair, Trinidad, Richard Luces, at the tender age of four, was encouraged by his caring parents to take piano lessons from a number of teachers including Marjorie Padmore, Ruby Pollard and his aunt Aspasia Cameron-Heilbron. His secondary school studies at St. Mary’s College were embellished by classical piano recitals and operatic performances. At his home in St. Clair, he joined his talented brothers Freddy, Kevin and Adrian, and his sister Anita in playing musical harmony for numerous house guests and visitors.

It was not until 1997, some 30 years after his last piano lesson, did Richard Luces perform at his first public function, a New Year’s Eve Dance. It was his performance at that dance that inspired himself and Toronto’s D.J. Bad Lad to produce his first album, the remarkably successful and ever popular “Tropical Sunset” (1999). This was followed by “Tropical Christmas” (1999); Trinidad’s best selling Christmas album in 2001, the passionate “Tropical Moonlight” (2002), the inspirational “Tropical Sunday”(2003), “Tropical Magic” (2004), “Tropical Gems” (2006) and his most recent, the sentimental “Tropical Romance”(2008).

This musician’s type of music is romantically nostalgic, evoking memories of the “combo music” era in Trinidad and Tobago, during the 1960’s. One can discern the influences of Stanley Black, Los Indios Tabajaras, Hugo Blanco and Pepe Jaramillo. Yet the originality of this music is its harmonizing of the steel drums with keyboard, piano, organ and strings.
